Guy Maddin Inspires British Contest

Filed under: Comedy, Independent, Fandom, Contests, Cinematical Indie

One of the greatest things about Guy Maddin is that his accomplishments come out of creativity and a spot-on eye, rather than money and flashy technology. Give the man an old camera, a few actors, and some weird props, and he can make a film that's not only engaging, but also visually stunning. He knows how to make the least become the most, and with the release of My Winnipeg, he's now inspiring others to do the same.

Jam! reports that UK filmmakers are getting a change to get their Maddin on. Both newbie and experienced filmmakers are getting the chance to submit 3-minute odes to their hometown, and Guy says "anything's eligible." Considering the lap-linked Winnipeg, it's not surprising that the doors are wide open...

Anyhow, the online contest is going to give out 1,500 pounds to the winner and a roundtrip flight to ... dum dum dum ... WINNIPEG! Sure, they also get their film screened and included on the UK's DVD release of My Winnipeg. But who cares when you can head to the snowy wonderland? I'm hoping the winner at least gets to choose the season.

If you want more information, head here.

Welcome back to another edition of Insert Caption -- that popular online game the whole dysfunctional family can enjoy! Last week, of course, we traveled to Gotham City and asked you fine, dark captioners to give us your best stuff for a photo from this summer's biggest film, The Dark Knight. Needless to say, you certainly lived up to your end of the bargain -- we received a ginormous amount of entries, and it definitely took some time to pick our three winners. Congrats to you; Gotham is safe once again ... for now.

1. "Hmm ... no, the Joker hasn't accepted my friend request on Facebook either." Jeremy C.

2. Really, Lucious? You can build a car that can practically fly, but you have to call me to get your iTunes off shuffle? Justin B.

3. "Maybe placing an ad on Craigslist for a 'Boy Wonder' wasn't such a good idea." -- Robert L.

This week we're psyching ourselves up for what looks to be another hysterical comedy from the team behind Talladega Nights and Anchorman. Directed by Adam McKay, Step Brothers (which hits theaters on July 25) stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as two competitive stepbrothers who must find a way to get along when their single parents get hitched. The three winners from this week will each receive one totally rad Step Brothers poster. Throw it up on the wall; make your stepbrothers and sisters jealous! "I won this! Not you!" Sound off below ...

Congrats to our three winners ... and perhaps Guillermo del Toro will use your ideas in the next installment. (Fresca's makin' a comeback!)

1. "Yep, there it is: 'May cause redness and swelling of appendages.'" -- Jordan B.

2. "Even Hellboy later admitted that night might be a new record for worst case of 'Beer Goggles'". -- Chaz K.

Will you be attending San Diego Comic Con later this month? Would you like to check out a super secret screening of Hamlet 2 AND take home a bunch of groovy movie merch? Cinematical is happy to officially launch this Hamlet 2 Comic Con Contest where ten lucky fans will win a pair of tickets to the aforementioned sneak screening of Hamlet 2, as well as the t-shirt pictured above, Hamlet 2 wrist bands and a Rock Me Sexy Jesus doll ... for those times when, well, you really need a Rock Me Sexy Jesus doll.

Welcome back to another funtastic, Americana edition of Insert Caption -- the game where you don't need fireworks to blow our minds. Last week we asked you to step up to the mic with some dope captions for a photo from The Wackness. Congrats to Kurt P., who can now escape the summer heat and chill out with a new portable DVD player. We're jealous. We might stalk you Kurt. Be ready.

1. "Young couple seeks father figure, must have Hawaiian shirt, facial hair, and soft focus." -- Kurt P.

This week we're celebrating our independence with a big, bad red dude named Hellboy. That's right! Guillermo del Toro, Hellboy and all his freak-ish friends are back to get their fight on in Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and the winners behind our three favorite captions based on the photo below will slip away with one Hellboy 2 t-shirt, one Hellboy 2 hat, one Hellboy 2 belt with buckle and one official Hellboy 2 poster. It's hot as hell outside, and come July 11 (when Hellboy 2 hits theaters), it'll get even hotter. Sound off critters!

Welcome to another edition of Insert Caption -- the game that's so much more dope than it is wacked. Last week, we asked you to bend down, lean forward and give us your best captions for a photo from The Love Guru. I don't know if you all brought in your own Caption Gurus (or if there was some other mystical power at work), but we received some of the most awesomest captions yet. Good job!

1. "This is hard to say, but the reason I called the four of you in to my office is to let you know that you are being downsized." -- Anthony G.

2. "We're sorry, we thought this was a shrink's office." -- Kurt P.

3. "Honey, I shrunk the agent." -- Suraj C.

This week, you're gonna have to bring out those mad skillz for a movie that's hotter than a McSkillet, ya dig? (What does that even mean?) Yup, we're shellin' out some lovin' for a little indie called The Wackness, featuring mad rhymes, dope flava ... Josh Peck, Olivia Thirlby, Famke Janssen and Ben Kingsley. Holla! But check it: One grand prize winner will take away a ridiculous Sony DVP-FX820 portable DVD player. Word. Seriously, though, The Wackness is a blast -- great soundtrack, fun movie, take your friends, the whole nine. Flick hits theaters on July 3. Sound off punks!

Welcome back to another edition of Insert Caption -- the game where you don't have to be a guru in order to win fabulous movie-related prizes. Last week, we asked you to point, laugh and get your caption on with a photo of two heads (belonging to Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway) from the film Get Smart. And that you did! Congrats go out to David R. for turning us on and off in the same sentence.

1. "That better be your shoe-phone, Max." -- David R.

2. "Um, I think we are just about in over our heads." -- Cherlyn

3. "I told you the Marie Antoinette spa treatment was a bad idea!!" -- Tim

This week, we're searching for a little love (and advice) from Guru Pitka (Mike Myers) in The Love Guru. Our old friend returns to live-action comedy with this flick about a self-help guru who travels from India to the states to help a star hockey player whose wife left him for a rival athlete. Sound familiar? Have you found yourself in a similar romantic squabble as of late? And are you seeking advice from all the wrong people (like that guy with the wooden leg who keeps asking to square off against you in a game of naked Twister)? Well, look no further my fellow caption-ers, because the three winners from this week will prance away with one The Love Guru Guru Pitka magic 8- ball action figure (pictured right, click to enlarge). This way, next time trouble comes knocking at your heart, you'll have your own personal guru to help steer you in the right direction. Sound off below ...

Paulo Coelho Gets Crafty with Film Adaptations

Filed under: Drama, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Contests

Although Paulo Coelho is one of the world's most translated living authors, his work hasn't exactly littered the big screen. This isn't due to a lack of interest, but rather the writer's reluctance to allow his work to be adapted into film. However, in the wake of projects like the Sarah Michelle Gellar-led Veronika Decides to Die and Eleven Minutes, he's taking on an adaptation his way.

Variety reports that Coelho's spearheading a project to adapt his book, The Witch of Portobello. But he's not looking to sell it to a big studio, or whip up a run-of-the-mill indie production. Instead, he wants to create a fan-made film mash-up.

Welcome to another edition of Insert Caption -- the game we've heard actually gets you smarter-er! Last week, we asked you to whip up a little somethin' somethin' for a photo from the new flick Kung Fu Panda. And that you did! Congrats to Tommy L. for reminding us that the game Duck Duck Goose amongst a group of animated Kung Fu fanatics might not be the best idea.

1. "I don't think we should play Duck Duck Goose. It just ... doesn't feel right." -- Tommy L.

2. "So ... these pants do make me look fat, then." -- Mike Z.

3. "Panda, this is an intervention. You're killing yourself with food!" -- Brian

This week, we're calling in all our best agents for a very special Insert Caption for the movie Get Smart (in theaters June 20). Dun dun dun! Starring Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway, we're looking at a big-screen remake of the popular '60s television series about two agents (one clumsy, one competent) who must battle the evil forces of KAOS in order to save the world. And for your part, three winners will take home one fingerprint kit, one globe beach ball, one Get Smart mug, one pair of binoculars, one spinner key ring, one Get Smart baseball cap, one Get Smart journal and one push button. Think you have what it takes make us laugh? Well then, Agent Caption-er, sound off below ...

Win a Chance to See 'Full Grown Men'

Filed under: Comedy, Independent, Fandom, Exhibition, Contests

I've no idea how I never noticed this during my random searches on IMDb, but there's a new indie film coming out that sounds like it could be a lot of fun; it has a great cast that makes things even better, and there's a contest to win tickets. The film in question is Full Grown Men, and Emerging Pictures' blog has thrown up a contest to win tickets to the film's New York City opening on June 25, with further contests to follow for San Francisco and Miami.

The film stars Matt McGrath (the spurned friend in The Anniversary Party) as a man who acts more like a kid than an adult. When his wife chastises him for being a playmate to his son rather than a father, he grabs his childhood friend (Judah Friedlander) and heads for their favorite theme park in Central Florida, where they're confronted with the incongruities between their past and present. But it's also got some sweet cameos -- Alan Cumming as a "disgruntled ex-theme park employee," Amy Sedaris as "a horny bartending clown," and Debbie Harry as "a delusional mermaid."

As for the contest ... this is all about boys trapped in men's bodies, so you just have to do a little writing. "If you're in love with an overgrown boy, or it's your own inner child that's gone wild -- or if you're just noticing Peter Pandemonium everywhere" you can comment in the EP blog and grab your chance to win. And if you are in NYC, San Fran, or Miami and check it out, let us know what you thought of the movie.
